Cairns to get new $85m shopping centre
A NEW $85 million shopping centre, including a full size Woolworths supermarket, is to be built in the heart of Cairns. The 17,000 sq m Central Park Market will be built in Spence St, opposite Cairns Central shopping centre, on vacant land behind the city’s police station and courthouse.
A consortium of three leading property developers – the HS Vision Group, the Gasparin Group and MV Design – expect to start construction of the centre early next year.
HS Vision director and chief executive officer Rose-Marie Dash said a national construction company based in Cairns would be chosen to build the centre, which would provide 150 jobs during the two year construction phase.
She said the 3800 sqm supermarket and 30 specialty stores, two "mini majors" and two medical centres would employ 300 full-time and part-time people when it was operational in 2015.
