THE region's biggest sporting club is defying a bleak economy to launch a $6.5 million expansion that will generate up to 80 local jobs.
After being named Queensland’s Best Club 2012 last week, Cazalys has announced it will extend its premises by more than 1800sq m.
The club will take over the existing Beaurepaires site, with the work expected to generate up to 70 jobs.
Cazalys general manager Jason Salecich said the club would hire up to 10 more staff to cope with the expansion.
He said the city's economic climate was precarious but he was confident the investment would pay off.
"This is a bold move for the club at a time when things are still pretty tough in Cairns," Mr Salecich said.
"A project of this size will, of course, benefit the struggling construction industry in Cairns and once again shows Cazalys' commitment to our local community."
The expansion includes a state-of-the-art children’s entertainment area, a new kitchen and cafe, a new stage and entertainment area and a refurbished gaming lounge.
